Behold the Master of Puppets Redux

Back n' da dayz, Metallica's third LP, Master of Puppets, saved this pre-teen from ever buying into any band that wore makeup or had hair bigger than my older sister. Up until that point, the Crue's Shout at the Devil LP was the bar that I compared all other bands to, but I never really cared so much for demonic imagery and faux-tribal lipstick on the cheeks look that they had going on, and although there is nothing really satanic about Master of Puppets, it still made my parents pissed off and that was enough for me to set a new standard of quality teenage angst-release through music.

So 20 years later, does Master still hold up? I am pretty solid on a "yes, oh yes indeed." I know I have not listened to this album in at least 9 years, but I think the quality of the first 3 Metallica releases still hold up today. They don't sound 20 years old to me, but that could just be my age-association bias. Ultimately, these releases fall into the category of "timeless" which is not entirely reserved for bands that become middle of the road and strike it big, with radio and tv recycling the marginal hits of a once great band into the general subconsciousness of a generation or two. Everybody knows that Metallica was way better with Cliff keepin' it real before they jumped on the Bob Rock bandwagon & started trying to be the tuffy Def Leppards.
The Warner Bros. have repackaged the first three of Metallica's albums in two different versions. There are "standard" editions, half speed remasters on one 33 & 1/3 standard weight LP, and there are "deluxe" versions, consisting of two 180 gram half speed mastered 45 rpm LP's in gatefold cover, for a wee bit more money. These probably won't be around forever, so get them while you can.

The Doug Yule Memorial BBQ & Sackrace

The Velvet Underground is the third album by American rock group The Velvet Underground. It was their first record to feature Doug Yule, John Cale's replacement in the band. It was recorded in 1968 at TTG Studios in Hollywood, California. It marks a radical shift in sound and approach.

The Velvet Underground was the band's first album for MGM Records, the band's first two albums having been issued by MGM subsidiary and legendary jazz label, Verve Records. The previously strong Andy Warhol influence is diminished, with the most notable ties to The Factory being the cover and back photographs taken by Warholite Billy Name, and opening track "Candy Says," written about Candy Darling (who would later appear in Lou Reed's 1972 song, "Walk On The Wild Side").

Early copies were on MGM, but most re-issue versions are on Verve. Upon initial release the album was somewhat more popular in the U.K. than in the U.S. The first U.S. version had the Reed mix, however the track times listed on the first U.S. issue more closely match the Valentin mix, possibly indicating that the Reed mix was issued by mistake. The original U.K. release used the Valentin mix. The 1985 U.S. re-issue LP used the Valentin mix. Other LP re-issues vary but most use the Valentin Mix. CD issues of the album use the Valentin mix, however, the Closet Mix is available on disc 4 of the 1995 CD box set Peel Slowly and See. In 2003, the album was ranked number 314 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Saves the Day!

This album came out a couple of years ago, but now you can buy it again on vinyl!

Genius Blues... the titles sez it all. This guy could play a mean motherfuckin' slide guitar, and you probably know a few of his songs from popular culture... they've been whitewashed by nearly every bar band in existence. Go for the real thing.

blue eyes/black kids

I don't know anything about this band, other than the fact that Pitchfork has been goo goo gaa gaa about them for, like, ever & now they have a record out. So, for those in the know, we've got it... Now come 'n get it.

No, you get awkward, you sassy-pants!

This is the UK import version of the NEWEST bE yOUR oWN pET LP, for some reason, label Ecstatic Peace's parent distro, Universal, had some old people issues about one or two of the songs BYOP recorded, and forbade them from adding those songs to the final product. So, for a little bit more $$$, you can have the album the band intended.

Beck Hansen – Odelay - 10th Anniversary Edition

One of the most inventive and eclectic figures to emerge from the '90s alternative revolution, Beck was the epitome of postmodern chic in an era obsessed with junk culture. Drawing upon a kaleidoscope of influences — pop, folk, psychedelia, hip-hop, country, blues, soul, funk, punk, noise, weather channel jazz, lounge, Brazilian music — Beck created a body of work that was wildly unpredictable, vibrantly messy, and explodin' with ideas. He was unquestionably a product of the media age — a synthesist whose concoctions were pasted together from bits of the past and present, in ways that could only occur to an overexposed pop-culture junkie. His surreal, free-associative lyrics were laced with warped imagery and a sardonic sense of humor that, while typical of the times, only rarely threatened the impact of his adventurous music. Odelay was released in June 1996 to massive acclaim, and pretty much became the soundtrack to that summer. It was the right music at the right time. This reissue is suppossedly a 4 LP set, with mega-artwork/liner notes, probably written by Thurston, and should put a nice dent in your wallet, but fuck that, you know it's gonna be worth it, everyone will envy you.

Blury photos of Rap records!

Three Six Mafia, like Dimmu Borgir, will scare the shit out of old people, reason enough to spin this wax, but if you get crunk, and you know if you do, then this is the mos crunk wax out right now.

The newest hip-hop sensation out of Denver, FLOBOTS! Some say they rock, some say they hippity hop, I don't know anything about that, but I do know this, they're so much better than the Fray.

I met 2/3's of the N.E.R.D. last time they were in Denver, and I must say that they are so, so very, very. very talented. Pharell's talent is never making eye contact with the general public, while at the same time he can multi-task between talking on his cellular telephone and scribbling his "name" with the other hand. The Asian guy wasn't there, but the other guy seemed all to happy to display his talent: sad puppy dog eyes & excuses. So I have not heard a single from this album, but I'm sure it's just really, really great.

black music month

...isn't at all about Norweigian Black Metal, as I have recently been informed by a myriad of fellow citizens! Shucks, I feel like a total Tokai! Here are some records that came out this week you might want to listen to!

Blury photos of heavy metal records!

Dimmu Borgir: Norway's answer to Nelson. HA! Just kidding! These crazy power metal shredders have been scaring the shit out of old people since the early 90's, and now these classic lp's are sure to make you ears bleed & your brain cry for mercy!

'Mericuh's got talent

...and his name is John Mayer, six string weilding housewife heartthrob who with this release shoots for some audiophile cred with his latest repackaging of his heart felt ballads and bluesey rockers. I'm so wet!
